Lock repair and adjustment
A lock that has started to stick rarely gets better on its own. It is far cheaper to fix than to be locked out by.
Locks give warning before they fail. The key needs jiggling. The handle has to be lifted twice. The door needs a shove before it will lock. Those are all repairable symptoms — and all of them are cheaper to deal with now than at 11pm on a Sunday.
Common repairs
- Misaligned doors where the lock no longer meets the keep
- Worn multipoint gearboxes that will not throw the hooks
- Stiff or seized cylinders
- Loose or dropped handles
- Failed door closers on communal doors
Repair or replace
Sometimes a repair is genuinely the better option; sometimes it is money spent twice. We will tell you honestly which one you are looking at, including when the sensible answer is to replace.
Lock repair — common questions
My door only locks if I lift the handle hard. Is that serious?
It is usually alignment or a wearing gearbox, and it tends to get worse. Worth looking at before it fails completely.
Can a seized lock be saved?
Sometimes, with cleaning and the right lubricant. If the internal components are worn, replacement is more reliable.
