Lock changes, done properly
When you no longer know where every key is, changing the lock is the only way to be certain.
Moving into a new home is the most common reason to change locks, and the most commonly skipped. You have no way of knowing how many keys the previous occupants cut over the years, or who still has one.
When to change rather than repair
- You have just moved into a property
- A tenancy has ended
- A relationship or house share has ended
- Keys have been lost, stolen or not returned
- A tradesperson or agent held keys for an extended period
In many cases only the cylinder needs changing, which keeps the cost down considerably compared with replacing the whole mechanism.
Lock changes — common questions
I have just moved in. Should I change the locks?
It is worth doing. You cannot know how many keys exist for a lock you did not fit.
How many keys do I get?
New cylinders typically come with three to five keys, and more can be cut.
